Mercy - Our Special Little Girl

mercycopy.jpg

Mercy had been hit by a car when she was younger, and we were told that the owners had found her lying on the road after being hit and that she suffered from seizures. Mercy came to VVPHC in 1998 to board with us and the other kitties in their family while their owners were moving.  The owners did not come back to pick up the cats, and we found homes for all of them, but decided that Mercy was so special that she could stay with us.  While she was boarding with us, Mercy had a litter of kittens, but was unable to care for them, probably due to the brain damage she suffered from being hit in the head by the car.

The right side of  Mercy's face was paralyzed from an accident with a dog so she always had a bit of a crazy look on her face, but it was also very endearing.  Her right eye did not close when she slept, and she could not blink that eye either, although the third-eyelid that cats have was still mobile and kept the eye from being damaged.  She had a bit of a problem with depth perception, so you really had to watch your fingers when giving her treats or you could often find kitty teeth clamping down on your finger instead of the treat.

Our little girl LOVED doughnuts, french fries, pork rinds, potato chips...well, anything with carbs, really.  She also loved pork meat (especially when she could pull it out of the other end of a breakfast burrito while someone was eating it!).  She got caught eating a biscuit one time when someone had stepped away from it, and instead of running away, she just started eating it faster.  Mercy had no problem with attempting to take the food from your hand while it was on its way to your mouth, and was able to give such a look of indignation when you tried to shoo her away that you couldn't help but give her a bit of the next bite!

Mercy loved everyone and everything.  Some days she wasn't sure if she was a cat, a dog, or a human.  She especially loved dogs, and many of our doggy patients got a little confused when this cat came up and started rubbing against them. If you were writing a check, Mercy was always more than happy to help you by standing over the checkbook and looking directly into your face!  The packing paper from boxes we received when purchasing inventory was a great plaything and Mercy loved to catch the invisible bugs in the paper and then fall asleep hidden in it.  Many times we would go to pick up the paper after unpacking a box, only to find it much heavier than anticipated!

Although Mercy was a sweet little girl, she did have her moments to the contrary, especially when it came to the other two clinic cats we have.  Nibiki (the "Queen"), and Stevie (the blind cat) were often involved in tussles with Mercy and usually on the losing end.  We would come in to the clinic in the mornings to find tufts of white hair all over the lobby and Nibiki would have a fresh war wound on her face!  She loved to be held and cuddled, but when she was done, she was not afraid to let you know that your cuddle was over by giving you a little nip on the hand or just a snarl.

Mercy left us the morning of October 7, 2007, to wait at the Rainbow Bridge.  Knowing her, she's not too concerned about us, because by now she's found the big field of doughnuts!  This little girl was very special to all of us and was such a source of joy and entertainment for everyone.  All of the employees at VVPHC, current and past, have many stories and memories of Mercy that will be sure to bring a smile to your face.  We all miss our little girl very much, but her memory will live on in our hearts.

We love and miss you, Mercy!
